Local group encourages flash mob on derelict pier

Infrastructure Local News

Six years on from when Helensburgh Pier was closed to marine traffic, “as many people as possible” are being encouraged to gather on the pierhead this weekend to cheer a sail past by the paddle steamer, Waverley.

Seemingly a recipe for disaster, the purpose of the occasion is intended as a show of support for the re-opening of the pier.

In a post on the Waverley Excursions Facebook page, Paul Semple, Waverley General Manager, said “We are exceptionally keen and determined to have Waverley make regular calls at Helensburgh once again and would encourage locals to show support by turning out to see Waverley.”

Whilst we hope that the event on the morning of Sunday the 18th of August is a success, we do question the wisdom of holding a mass gathering on the derelict structure.

The local group who have been dealing with Argyll and Bute council regarding the pier say they are optimistic that a favourable outcome can be achieved. We can only assume that this is their first time dealing with Argyll and Bute Council and wish them the best of luck.
